lip blush healing

One of the most common things new lip blush clients tell us after their appointment is: “I wish someone had told me exactly what to expect.” The lip blush healing process has a few stages that can catch people off guard — especially the part where it looks like the colour has completely disappeared. Spoiler: it hasn’t. It’s just doing what it’s supposed to do.

At BeYOUtiful Ink Studio in Little Falls, Minnesota, we walk every client through the lip blush healing process in detail at their appointment. This guide shares that same information so you know exactly what you’re getting into before you book — and so you never panic unnecessarily during the healing stages.

Days 1 to 2: Immediately After Your Lip Blush Treatment

In the first 24 to 48 hours after your lip blush treatment, your lips will look significantly darker and more intense than your final healed result. This is completely normal. The colour you see immediately after the procedure is not the colour you’ll keep — it will soften and lighten considerably as healing progresses. Your lips may also feel tender, swollen, and slightly chapped. Mild swelling is a standard part of the lip blush healing response and will subside within 24 to 48 hours for most clients.

Keep lips clean and gently moisturised using the aftercare product provided by your artist. Avoid touching your lips unnecessarily, don’t eat spicy or acidic foods, and drink through a straw to avoid saturating the treated area. No kissing, no sun exposure, and no lip products other than the recommended aftercare ointment during this phase.

Days 3 to 5: Peeling and Flaking Begins

Around days 3 to 5 of the lip blush healing process, the surface of the lips will begin to flake and peel — similar to the way chapped or sunburned lips shed skin. This is the most visually alarming stage for most clients. The flaking skin will be the colour of the pigment applied, which can make it look like the colour is literally falling off your lips. It is. But don’t worry — there’s pigment underneath that’s settling into the deeper skin layers.

The most important rule during this phase is: do not pick at the peeling skin. Let it shed naturally. Pulling off skin that isn’t ready to come away disrupts the healing process and can pull pigment unevenly, leading to patchiness in the finished result. Continue applying your aftercare ointment gently and let the lip blush healing process work on its own schedule.

Days 6 to 10: The “Ghost Phase”

This is the stage that worries most clients the most — and the stage we tell every single person about in advance so they’re prepared. Around days 6 to 10, after the peeling has finished, your lips may appear to have lost almost all of their colour. The lips can look pale, washed out, and almost as if the treatment never happened. This is affectionately known in the industry as the “ghost phase.”

The ghost phase is completely normal and temporary. What’s happening is that the top layer of healed skin is now covering the pigment, which is still settling beneath the surface. The colour will begin to reappear gradually over the following weeks as the skin fully heals and the pigment stabilises. Understanding this stage is one of the most important parts of the lip blush healing experience — most “I’m unhappy with my results” messages that come in during this period resolve themselves completely by week 6.

Weeks 2 to 4: Colour Gradually Returns

From around week 2 onward, the colour of your lip blush will begin to slowly reappear through the healed surface skin. It won’t come back all at once — it emerges gradually, and unevenly at first. Some areas may look more pigmented than others. Some patches may still appear lighter. This is normal and does not indicate a problem. The lip blush healing process takes time, and the final, even result requires patience.

During this phase, lips should feel comfortable and normal. You can return to regular eating, drinking, and wearing lip products as long as the surface is fully healed (no open areas or active peeling). Avoid prolonged sun exposure and continue using SPF lip balm to protect the pigment as it settles.

Weeks 4 to 6: Final Healed Result Emerges

By weeks 4 to 6, the lip blush healing process is largely complete and your true healed result is visible. The colour will have settled to its final tone — typically 30 to 50% lighter and softer than the day-one intensity. This is the real result, and for the vast majority of clients, it’s beautiful. Lips look naturally tinted, defined, and healthy. Many clients cannot believe the difference from how the colour looked immediately post-procedure.

At this 6-week mark, your touch-up appointment is scheduled. This perfecting session allows your artist to assess the healed result, fill in any areas where pigment retention was lighter, and make any refinements needed to achieve the ideal final colour and definition. Most clients need only minor adjustments at this stage. Explore our lip services to see the full range of styles available.

What Affects Lip Blush Healing?

Several factors influence how your lip blush healing progresses. Iron-deficient or anaemic clients may experience slightly more bleeding during the procedure, which can affect pigment retention. Clients who take blood thinners or certain supplements (like fish oil or vitamin E) may also experience more bleeding. Existing lip conditions — cold sores, lip filler, very dry lips — all affect how the skin heals. Your skin type, sun exposure habits, and how closely you follow aftercare instructions also play significant roles in the outcome. Your artist at BeYOUtiful Ink will review all of these factors with you before your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions: Lip Blush Healing

1. Is the ghost phase the same for everyone during lip blush healing?

The ghost phase — where lips appear to lose almost all their colour around days 6 to 10 — is a universal part of the lip blush healing process that virtually all clients experience to some degree. However, how dramatic it appears does vary. Clients with very dry lips or those who experienced more surface peeling tend to notice a more pronounced ghost phase. Clients with more resilient skin or those who had a touch-up session after a previous lip blush treatment often experience a milder ghost phase on subsequent sessions. Regardless of how dramatic it looks, the ghost phase always resolves. If your lips still appear pale or patchy at the 6-week mark, this is exactly what the touch-up session is designed to address.

2. Can I wear lipstick during lip blush healing?

During the first 2 weeks of lip blush healing, all lip products other than the recommended aftercare ointment should be avoided. This includes lipstick, lip liner, lip gloss, and lip balm containing strong fragrances or actives. Wearing lip products too early can interfere with the healing process and affect how the pigment sets. After the surface has fully healed — typically from around week 2 to 3 onward — you can gradually reintroduce gentle, hydrating lip products. Full lipstick and liner use is generally fine from week 4 onward. Your artist at BeYOUtiful Ink will provide specific guidance on when to reintroduce different lip products based on how your individual healing is progressing.

3. What if I get a cold sore during lip blush healing?

Cold sores (oral herpes) are a real consideration for lip blush clients. The trauma of the procedure can trigger an outbreak in people who carry the herpes simplex virus, even if they haven’t had a cold sore in years. If you have a history of cold sores, we strongly recommend speaking with your doctor before your appointment about taking antiviral medication prophylactically — typically starting 2 to 3 days before the procedure and continuing for a few days after. A cold sore outbreak during lip blush healing can significantly affect the final result because the virus interferes with the skin healing process and pigment retention in the affected areas. At BeYOUtiful Ink, we always ask about cold sore history during the consultation phase so we can make appropriate recommendations.

4. How do I know if my lip blush healing is going wrong?

Some discomfort, swelling, peeling, and colour change during lip blush healing is completely expected. Signs that something may need attention include: swelling that increases rather than decreases after day 2; discharge or oozing that is yellow or green (rather than clear) from the treated area; significant pain that is worsening rather than improving; or symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives or difficulty breathing. These are rare but warrant immediate contact with a healthcare professional. Mild prolonged pinkness or tenderness beyond week 1 is generally not a concern. At BeYOUtiful Ink in Little Falls, we are always available to discuss any healing concerns and can advise on whether what you’re experiencing is normal or requires further attention.

5. Why does my lip blush look patchy after healing?

Some patchiness in the healed result is very common after a first lip blush session and is a normal part of the lip blush healing process. The lips are a challenging area for pigment retention — the skin is constantly moving, subject to moisture from saliva, and sheds surface skin cells relatively quickly. Areas with drier or thicker skin, lip borders, and areas with underlying lip filler may retain pigment differently than the rest of the lip. This is precisely why the 6 to 8 week touch-up session is built into every lip treatment at BeYOUtiful Ink — it exists specifically to address any uneven retention and bring the result to its full potential. After both the initial session and the touch-up, most clients achieve an even, beautifully consistent healed colour.
