At BeYOUtiful Ink, restorative tattooing is approached with patience, precision and respect for the tissue.
From 3D areola restoration following breast surgery to scar and stretch mark revision, camouflage and other specialized restorative concerns, every service begins with the same philosophy:
Restorative tattooing is a specialized area of tattoo artistry focused on improving the appearance of tissue that has changed through surgery, scarring, injury, medical treatment or other life experiences.
Depending on the concern, treatment may involve tattoo pigment, inkless revision, needling, camouflage or a carefully planned combination of techniques.
But restorative work isn’t simply about covering something.
Before recommending treatment, Kelly considers the maturity, texture, color and stability of the tissue, along with previous procedures and other factors that may affect healing.
Some areas may benefit from tattooing. Others may benefit from revision before pigment is considered. And sometimes, the most appropriate recommendation is simply to allow the tissue more time to heal.
The goal is not to perform a procedure because one is available. The goal is to determine what best respects the tissue in front of us.
For survivors, previvors and others who have experienced mastectomy, breast reconstruction or other breast surgery, 3D areola tattooing can recreate the visual appearance of an areola and nipple through customized color, shading, highlights and anatomical detail.
Each design is created specifically for the individual—considering placement, size, skin tone, reconstruction and personal preferences.
A scar’s appearance is influenced by more than its color.
Texture, thickness, maturity, movement and the surrounding tissue all matter when determining whether—and how—it should be treated.
Depending on the scar, Kelly may recommend inkless revision or needling to improve texture before camouflage pigment is ever considered.
Some scars are appropriate for treatment. Others are not.
Stretch marks are a form of changed tissue and should be evaluated individually.
Inkless stretch mark revision uses controlled needling rather than skin-colored tattoo pigment as the first approach, with the goal of supporting improvement in the visible texture and appearance of appropriate, mature stretch marks.
Treatment recommendations depend on the individual tissue and may require more than one session.
When healed, stable tissue is lighter than the surrounding skin, carefully customized pigment may help reduce visible contrast and create a more blended appearance.
Camouflage is not appropriate for every scar or area of discoloration. The tissue must first be evaluated for color, texture, maturity and stability.
When camouflage is appropriate, pigment is customized to the surrounding skin rather than simply choosing a pre-made “skin color.”
Scarring, injury, surgery or other tissue changes can sometimes alter the natural color or appearance of the lip border.
When the tissue is suitable for tattooing, restorative lip techniques may be used to visually rebalance color and improve the appearance of affected areas.
In some cases, scar revision may be recommended before pigment is introduced.
Restorative artistry isn’t limited to breasts and scars.
Specialized tattoo techniques may also be considered for concerns such as belly button restoration, toenail or thumbnail restoration and other areas where tattoo artistry can help recreate the visual appearance of an anatomical feature.
Because these cases are highly individual, consultation is the best place to begin.
One of the most important parts of restorative work is knowing when not to tattoo.
Pigment cannot correct every tissue concern, and adding color to tissue that is not ready—or attempting to camouflage texture with pigment alone—may not produce the result you are hoping for.
That’s why Kelly’s assessment begins with the tissue rather than a predetermined procedure.
Depending on what she sees, she may recommend:
A conservative recommendation is still a successful consultation.
Your skin doesn’t need more treatment than it needs.
Sometimes tattooing is about so much more than beauty.
For many people, breast reconstruction is a long process. 3D areola restoration can be one of the final visual steps following mastectomy and reconstruction.
Using customized color, shading, highlights and anatomical detail, Kelly creates the illusion of dimension on otherwise flat tissue. Designs may be unilateral or bilateral and are customized to the individual reconstruction and client.
BeYOUtiful Ink generally requires a *minimum of six months following the most recent breast surgery* before considering tattooing. Tissue must be fully healed and stable, and additional time or medical clearance may be recommended depending on reconstruction, radiation, scarring and individual healing.
Previous areola tattoos that have faded, changed color or did not create the desired appearance may also be evaluated for correction.
Restorative care for breast cancer survivors + previvors.
BeYOUtiful Ink reserves a limited number of complimentary 3D areola restoration appointments for eligible breast cancer survivors and previvors through our restorative program.
The program is intended to help make specialized restorative tattooing accessible while also increasing awareness of what is possible following breast surgery and reconstruction.
Eligibility requirements apply, and participation begins with an initial consultation.
Specialized work deserves a specialized approach.
Restorative tattooing involves more than knowing how to place pigment into skin. Scarred, reconstructed and previously treated tissue can behave differently from untreated skin and requires thoughtful assessment before treatment begins.
